A strong spine is really important. It allows you to carry out everyday activities without back pain and makes your life way easier. Remember that you have to keep your back strong enough to support you for a lifetime. So, even if you don’t feel any pain or discomfort right now, that does not mean it will not happen in the coming years. What can you do to take a good care of your spine?

Sleep properly

A good night’s sleep is important for your body and mind. But it is not enough just to lie down anywhere and fall asleep. You may not know it, but your spine can suffer if you choose a bad mattress or pillow. When going to sleep, you should choose a pillow that will let you keep the natural curvature of your back and neck. If you like to sleep on your back, use a pillow of medium thickness. If you cannot imagine sleeping otherwise than on your side, choose a thick pillow. In order to keep your back strong, you should pay close attention to your posture and sleeping position. It is much more advantageous to sleep on your side or back, rather than on your tummy — the latter position makes the spine more vulnerable to injuries.

Are you sitting well?

The way you sit is also very important to your spine. Did you know that if you sit in the wrong position, the load on your spine can increase by 40 percent? It is not hard to guess that the risk of injury is really high. When you are working in a seated position, take your time to adjust the chair and desk at work. If you have trouble finding the best position, ask the employee responsible for health and safety — (s)he should be able to help you.

Stay active

Your level of physical activity is extremely important if you want to keep your spine in good shape for the rest of your life. For people who already suffer from back pain, swimming should be the best choice. It allows you to strengthen your muscles without putting too much pressure on your joints. If you do not like working out in the gym and swimming just is not for you, even regular walks can benefit your back and your health in general. This way, all your muscles will be strengthened and your spine will be kept in the correct position.

Eat well

Did you know that your diet can also be beneficial for your spine? Choose the healthiest options, such as fruits and vegetables, and avoid foods that provide no nutritional value or are potentially fattening. Try to get sufficient nutrients and microelements from your diet, including calcium, which can save you from some bone problems, such as osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. Try to eat regularly. It is generally beneficial to your health to eat small meals at short intervals. What is more, it can help you keep your weight at a good level, which is good for both your appearance and your back. Whenever you are not sure if you are making the right choice for your spine, consult a specialist.
