Staying in good shape is really important — the older you get, the more it matters. It can help you prevent many possible health problems or even deal with those that are already present. What should you do?

Don’t forget about regular activity

Staying physically active makes it easier to get both your body and mind in shape. When you are working out (in any way you like), not only your muscles get worked on, but also your body produces endorphins, the hormones responsible for happiness. Although, remember not to force yourself into something you don’t like — you will get discouraged really quickly.

How to find the right activity?

It might be tricky, and the best answer here is to try out many things. Maybe you remember enjoying something especially back when you were at school? Perhaps you should try those things. Just remember to cut your coat according to your cloth: don’t try to play the whole football match if you have spent most of your free time sitting in front of TV! Start with walks, short runs or swimming. Don’t worry if you get tired quickly — it is normal. Physical condition will come with time, just don’t give up!

Keep your diet healthy

Your diet is becoming more important when you get older, so try to pay close attention to what you eat. Even though TV commercials are tempting you to buy sweets and chips, try to fill your plate with something actually worth eating. It is said that we should try to eat more vegetables and fruits. Just remember to keep them fresh and delicious: this way, you will find it easier to eat even those veggies you don’t really like! Also, avoid highly processed foods, such as frozen pizza or ramen noodles.

Stay regular

This includes both regular eating and frequent exercise. Taking a long walk once a week is definitely better than nothing, but it will not give you the best physical shape you can get. Keep in mind that what comes easily to young people has to be earned by hard work for someone in more advanced age. Thus, eat five small meals a day and try to move every other day. It is up to you what activity you will choose. Just keep it regular and don’t forget to push yourself (not too hard, though).

Keep in touch

Benefits that come with socializing cannot remain underrated. Talking with people you like — no matter the gender, age and life situation — will help you stay strong and positive. Even if your friends live far away, try to stay in touch with them via social media, e-mail, phone, video calls or other means of communication. Humans are social beings and need others to be fully happy. Allow yourself to spend your free time with someone whose company you truly enjoy. Perhaps you will even find a physical activity that will allow you to stay sharp and spend time together? At least give it a shot!
